New in the Studio - Low Tide - #4 in the Shorescape Series

'Low Tide' is #4 in Phil Seder’s Shorescape series. This mixed-media sculpture features a detailed burl wood slab with a complex grain and rich natural color, mounted on a clean walnut plinth. Affixed to the burl wood are two textured forged-steel starfish, alongside several carved wooden shells embedded directly into the sculptural form. The starfish themselves are meticulously crafted to embrace the organic folds and crevices of the wood.  Heat and metal treatment creates color contrast between the two.  Additional carved wooden shells rest on the base below. The piece balances the natural shape and raw texture of the wood with the crafted forms of the steel starfish, creating a focused, grounded study of a common Oregon coastal scene.
