This sculptural work by Phil Seder is a marriage of the beauty of fine wood grain with small-scale forged and welded metal craft. The base material is a rescued piece of maple stove wood, milled to expose the extraordinary grain structure on one side and presented live-edged on the other. The octopus was created using intensely small sale forging and welding. Each arm of the completed octopus had to be heated and maticulously bent over many hours to carefully fit it around the wood. A final florish was added in the form of the steel band that runs the width of the piece and provides supporting structure of the single pole mounting point.
